How do different cultures use piercings to make themselves more beautiful?

In the Mayan society, labret lip piercings are reserved for male members of the higher castes. The male members wore labrets made of gold to be able to look like serpents. It was very important that they wore labrets made of gold because it showed as a sign of maturity and responsibility.
